maypole(b)So spring has finally sprung, and we are headed for that wonderful month of not one, but TWO Bank Holiday weekends…hooray! As you are probably well aware, the first weekend of May is marked by many a ‘May Day’ tradition throughout the towns and villages of the UK, and this year, is set to be no exception.

May_day_2011_5Jack in the green2With many of its folklore roots stemming from the Dark Ages and Paganism, May Day is traditionally associated with fun, revelry and even fertility – these ideas have been celebrated in various ways over the centuries throughout the Northern Hemisphere, and many of these traditions still remain today. Expect village fetes, Maypole and Morris dancing, May Queens and Jack-in-the-Greens…and of course music, laughter, and food and drink-based frivolities!

If you’re not signed up to any May Day activities, but still want to make the most of that all-important day off, then perhaps one of these ideas will take your fancy?…

spirit of OxfdWith the Spirit of Oxford River Cruise for 2 you are sure to pass many a May Day activity, as you travel upstream, on an elegant Edwardian style river boat – past some of Oxford’s most stunning scenery and landmarks. Follow the routes of some of England’s most loved authors, such as C. S. Lewis, Evelyn Waugh and Gerard Manly Hopkins as well as Lewis Carroll, and you’ll soon begin to understand where their inspiration came from. At a humble price of just £58.00 for 2 people, there really is no time to waste!

    Windsor Bike

Or you could hop on a bike for an idyllic and unique tour of Windsor Castle. With this fantastic guided tour, you can enjoy a relaxing, fun day out, exploring one of Britain’s most loved Royal landmarks, whilst learning a thing or two along the way…you can even stop for lunch before exploring the castle at your own leisure. This tour is an activity for anyone who is able to ride a bike, and wants to spend their Bank Holiday enjoying the great British outdoors!

    cotswold tea

Perhaps you’d rather just relax a little, and while away the hours with an Afternoon Tea for Two at the award winning Cotswold House? Choose from an exceptional selection of sandwiches, cakes and scones, and take your tea (or coffee) out on to the Pavilion Terrace, in the beautifully landscaped gardens. Treat yourself and spend some quality time with a loved one or an old friend, and make the most of your time together.

With plenty of extra time this weekend, we’re sure you’ll want to get out there & enjoy yourselves. So if you’re still looking for something fun to do, but none of these ideas are quite right, then you’ll find an abundance of options here…enjoy yourselves!
