As Richard Hammond would testify, the lengthy straights at Elvington are designed to entice the top speed out of super cars - as Elvington was the unfortunate location of the Top Gear presenter near-death experience when he lost control of the rocket powered car and came off the track. 'The Hamster' as he is known on the popular BBC TV Show lost control of his Jet Engined 'Vampire' at 300mph and was lucky to survive. However, the fact remains that Elvington was chosen as the launch site as it offers the best chance of reaching those speeds due to it's insanely wide and never ending straights...perfect for driving a supercar on a speed-searching track day - perfect for the car loving petrol head in your life.
