We had a wonderful time learning archery. Our instructor was very helpful and outgoing and made us feel at ease - she really facilitated a fun afternoon. The only thing that could be improved is the lack of signposts once in the Beaulieu resort car park. All in all though a very enjoyable time pretending to be robin hood.

The only thing wrong was the mud we had to walk through, I had my wellies so I was fine, I know you said it could be wet but I think some thing could be done to make it more dryer, Gravel, decking, maybe? Still enjoyed it and would come again, thanks.

This was a Christmas present from our two youngsters and was a lovely surprise. The archery was fun and it was good to be part of a smallish group. Unfortunately, I didn't realise that the guard on the inside of my elbow had slipped so I was badly bruised for quite a few days afterwards. All in all, very good. Thank you.

Was a good afternoon. It would have been better if the instructor had more than the basic qualification and could teach / coach more espically as this was a small group (4). I would not have liked this if it had been in a group of 30; there would not have been as much shooting available and too much waiting around.

New Forest Activities Archery Experience Days Staff Review

A New Forest Activities Welcome

Following the kayaking experience I reviewed last, Robb and I headed over to Bucklers Hard for an archery experience with New Forest Activities. Located on a farm, there were once again a myriad of animals wandering around, including chickens, pigs (and piglets!), rabbits and cows. As Robb said, I think we’d seen more wildlife that day than in the entire year.

We met our instructor for the session, Jake, who lead us through the farm to the archery range. The sun was starting to set over the fields, making a really beautiful scene for shooting some arrows. In the group were nine people, six adults and three young boys, so again it’s obvious this experience is suitable for everyone including families and youngsters, just like the kayaking.

Learning the Basics of Archery

After a quick briefing on how to hold the bows, load the arrows and shoot accurately, we took turns in groups of five and four to fire around six arrows each at the targets. After being absolutely useless at archery last time I tried it, I wasn’t expecting any miracles, but I actually wasn’t too bad! Maybe it was because we were alongside children and families, but still, I was definitely better than last time. We had some fun with the Go Pros, placing them on top of the targets and trying to fire near them (not at them!). One man did actually knock the camera off, but luckily it survived.

Fun and Games at the Target Range

Jake got us playing some games like trying to hit one of every colour and getting all the arrows grouped together. Then the kids decided to teach us some games, which may not have made the most sense, but were still great fun. After a while the cows in the neighbouring field decided to wander over and watch, which distracted the younger participants for a while, before Jake got everyone back together for one last go.

An Experience Day to Remember

At the end we walked back through the farm, acquainting ourselves with the animals as we went, before it was time to head home. What a great day with New Forest Activities! The weather had been kind, and the people were great company. Big thanks to James and Jake for being fantastic teachers and making the day so enjoyable. This experience is perfect for a family day out or for those wanting to take up a new hobby, highly recommendable.

Expert Interview with New Forest Activities

NFA Header

Having done a kayaking and archery experience with New Forest Activities, I know just what fun days out they have to offer – but that doesn’t mean you do! Below is an interview with Laura, talking about their fantastic outdoor adventures and exciting plans for the future.

1) Please explain your journey as ‘New Forest Activities’ so far.

When I started at New Forest Activities we had a small team of 5 and worked from a small building, which was an old dairy, in Beaulieu. Over the past few years the company has grown massively and now has 12 permanent staff that grows to 20+ over the Summer months. I really enjoy working for such a fun and proactive company. The tourism industry is never dull and working to provide fun activities that bring people an experience they’ll remember fondly is really fulfilling.

We are always thinking of ways to enhance people’s experiences with us, creating new products such as paddle to the pub, and new courses so people can grow with us. We want to give people a reason to keep coming back year after year.

2) What has been the biggest or most memorable event you’ve provided?

There have been loads of events over the years. We’ve done lots for big corporate companies such as Vodafone and Microsoft, giving them team-building days and fun away days. We had the team from GAME down who did a military style training event with our Battlefield LIVE, this included full army get up and drill sergeants!

We’ve had the local radio station Breeze FM in to meet the team and report live from our offices for a week. We’ve even had a few celebrities out on the water; one was booked on in secret and taken out by the team…Kerry Katona!

We regularly have youth groups down and do a lot of work with Princess Trust groups. It’s very satisfying to see the kids develop skills and really grow with confidence over the week they are with us.

3) Is there any inside information you can give us?

New Forest Activities is open all year round but obviously are at our busiest in the Summer. During the Winter months our paddle sports especially aren’t quite so popular. If I’m honest this is where people are missing out! The Beaulieu River is stunning throughout the year and on a crisp Winters day it is truly beautiful. There’s also different wildlife and a different feel to the experience. It’s a shame people shy away from it when a few decent layers and you’ll be just as warm. As they say, there’s no such thing as bad weather just the wrong clothing!

4) Do you have any exciting plans for the future that you’d like to tell us about?

New Forest Activities have grown so much over the past few years and don’t intend to stop! We now have activities available all round the New Forest and surrounding areas. This year alone we started offering Kayak hire at Sopley Lake and another Archery session in Burley. We are also developing new packages that are perfect for groups such as Stag & Hens and children’s parties. Who wouldn’t love a Pirate party as a kid?! Not to mention we now have a mini bus which is ideal for group hire or collecting people from their accommodation. The paddle sport side of things is more exciting than ever with more trips and courses available. The Winter will be used to work out more products and even more activities for next year. Watch this space!

5) What would you say is your most frequently asked question?

Will I fall in?! A lot of people are worried about falling out of their Canoe or capsizing their Kayak, but the boats we use are very wide and stable making them perfect for beginners. You really do have to try hard to tip them! We obviously have more advanced kit such as our Sea Kayaks that allow people to develop their skills and progress in the sport.

We often get asked if our Battlefield LIVE game hurts…not at all! The guns use an infra-red technology which means there are no projectiles, no lasers, and no pain!

Lastly we often get asked when we close for the Winter. We don’t. New Forest Activities is open all year round and just as fun in the Winter as in the Summer!

FAQ
Can I take part in an archery experience if I am pregnant?

So long as you have approval from your doctor and feel comfortable taking part in the activity, this would be absolutely fine.

Are there any nearby shops or places to buy lunch?

Yes, the archery is based near a small village called Beaulieu, which has a high street with various different shops.

My partner and I would like to book an archery experience in the summer. Can we still book, even though the minimum group size is 4?

Yes. During the summer, experiences are shared by at least 4 people, but smaller groups can still book provided minimum numbers are met. If you've a particular date in mind, we're happy to check if there's an available session.

Is this experience suitable for someone in a wheelchair?
The centre are more than happy to attempt to accommodate participants in a wheelchair. However, the archery range is located through a field. If the wheelchair user has people to help them through the field or their wheelchair is strong enough to get over that kind of ground, they are more than welcome to join in the experience.
