ALL ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE

Parent And Child Wood Carving Lesson In The Highlands

Take to the woods and enjoy quality time with your budding young woodworker. Learn to use a variety of tools, and take home your own unique creations.

This hands-on lesson, in the Cairngorms National Park, is an intensive introduction to the ancient art of wood carving – specially designed for a parent and child. Spend a memorable day together creating your choice of several wooden items using traditional Scandinavian hand tools and techniques.

Aviemore’s Inshriach estate provides an idyllic setting for the day’s activity. Here, you’ll be met by your teacher, Tom, in his woodland workshop. Tom is an experienced craftsman, with a deep-rooted passion for wood, and an intimate knowledge of its properties. During the six-hour session, he will guide you through tree identification and wood selection, before demonstrating the proper use of various Swedish axes and carving knives. You’ll learn to handle these tools yourselves, and take advantage of the wood’s natural grain to shape one-of-a-kind, tactile objects. As the wind rustles the leaves overhead and delicate shavings gather around your feet, you’ll find everyday stresses drift away, to be replaced by a deep calm and the shared pleasure of a time-honoured craft.

The Parent And Child Wood Carving Lesson, in the Highlands, is a chance to connect over a rewarding new skill. An Experience Days gift voucher would delight any proud mum or dad.
