This bowl turning experience, in Stafford, is a chance for budding woodworkers to develop their lathing technique, in an instructive environment. Use a pole lathe to turn a bowl from green wood, and benefit from an experienced teacher’s advice and encouragement.
The pole lathe was invented in the Middle Ages, though less sophisticated tools had been in use since at least the days of ancient Egypt. The new, pedal-operated system enabled woodturners to work with both hands – an advantage you’ll be glad of, during the full day course! You’ll begin by selecting and splitting a piece of green wood with a froe. Next, using a shave horse and drawknife, you’ll prepare it for the lathe. Your instructor will then provide step-by-step guidance as you shape the bowl with chisels. Light refreshments are available throughout, and you’re welcome to enjoy lunch in the onsite bakery and café. All materials and tools are provided, and you’ll get to take home your hand turned souvenir at the end of the day.
